GCTU Refurbished Infirmary Commissioned
The GCTU infirmary has been officially opened following its refurbishment. The Vice Chancellor, Prof. Emmanuel Ohene Afoakwa cut the tape to officially open the facility on Tuesday, 16th May 2023.
The refurbishment was undertaken by GTI Health Care as part of an MOU signed in February to upgrade the facility to provide health care services for a renewable period of three years.
The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Emmanuel Ohene Afoakwa, expressed appreciation to GTI Health Care for partnering GCTU in its effort to have the infirmary revamped to serve the health needs of the university community. He said, “we handed over a bare structure to you a few weeks ago and we can see that you have totally transformed it into a beautiful facility. We cannot but recognise your effort and investment you put into making the place what we are seeing now”.
The infirmary had been defunct for several years compelling students and staff to seek health care at other facilities. The university Management realizing that they needed to do something to ensure the well-being of their students and staff, sought for a strategic partner to revive the infirmary.
“We have been looking for this opportunity to be able to afford our students some form of ready and available healthcare support on campus.
“Of course, we don’t have enough infrastructure and it’s always been a headache but since you came up with the idea that you can refurbish the place and make it functional as an infirmary with a pharmacy, we thought it was a very good opportunity”, the VC said.
The VC was particularly happy about the fact that all staff and students will enjoy free consultation. He said: “this is something that you can’t get anywhere, so we are very grateful”.
The refurbished facility will therefore, ensure that the university community (students, staff and faculty) have a place where they can receive medical attention without having to wait for hours or travel off campus.
Speaking in an interview after the commissioning of the project, the Operations Manager of GTI Health Services, Mr. Kojo Boateng, gave an overview of the operation of the health facility.
He said the four-bed infirmary has detention facilities and a mini pharmacy where drugs can be purchased at affordable prices. With the help of their mother laboratory in Osu, samples can be taken for more specialised tests at the request of the doctor or client.
There is also a consultation room and a nursing station for the treatment of minor injuries and cuts.
The facility he said is for primary health care but “if there is the need, patients will be referred to a major facility”.
He assured that consultation and nursing care will be free of charge. “The only elements that will attract cost are medication and labs”, Mr. Boateng added.
Mr. Boateng also assured that there will be an in-house doctor and nurses to provide round the clock services.
In addition to its routine operation, the Operations Manager said the facility will also introduce periodic medical screening exercises for the university community especially breast and cervical screening for ladies and prostate screening for men above 40 years.
