Gradually, Silicon Valley of Ghana Agenda is Taking Shape – Prof. Emmanuel Ohene Afoakwa.
“I am very happy about the work we are carrying on in support of my vision of creating a Silicon Valley in Ghana. Gradually, it is taking shape, changing, and growing with project after project coming up”.
The VC, Prof. Emmanuel Ohene Afoakwa said this at the sod-cutting ceremony for the construction of a Multipurpose Sports Complex for the university.
The VC officially handed over the project site and the drawings to the contractor, EON Complex Ltd, who won the bid through a competitive tender to undertake the construction.
The ceremony which took place Wednesday, February 8, was attended by Management, staff and the contractor. Addressing the attendants, the VC expressed delight at the commencement of the project which was promised two years ago at the commissioning of the Astro Turf.
“After the construction of the Astro Turf, we promised the students that we were going to do phase two of the Multipurpose Sports Complex with stands for their comfort.
“Two years later, I am excited that we have been able to put together all the required documents in preparation for the phase two”, the VC said.
The construction of the sports complex is part of the VC’s vision to create a state-of-the-art sports and recreational facility for students on campus. He believes in the holistic training of students where equal attention is given to their mental as well as physical development.
Undertaking the construction of the sports edifice at this time also ties in with the VC’s declaration of 2023 as a year of enhancing “Student Experience”, an initiative he announced at the maiden Staff Durbar held on 30th January to outline his vision and strategic direction for the year.
Speaking on the student experience which was the first of five thematic areas, the VC said “before the end of the year we are going to see a dramatic change in the experience of our students. A lot is going to be done by all of us so that the students we are nursing can have better witnesses about us and the university so that by the time they are leaving, they will have better experiences than they had when they came in”.
After handing over to the contractor, Prof. Afoakwa appealed to him to do a diligent and timely work.
“Since this is the first time we are working with you, we hope that you will be able to meet the six months timeline which starts today”, he appealed.
Providing more details about the project, the Director of Works and Physical Development, Surv. Gordon Baapiri said “the project comprises a multipurpose court consisting of basketball, handball, volleyball and tennis, and other ancillary facilities such as a 250-capacity spectator stands.
“In addition, there will be an infirmary to administer first aid, changing rooms, washrooms and two offices for the staff who will be manning the facility”.
Surv. Baapiri cautioned the contractor not to compromise on the quality and terms of the contract.
“We expect you to work with the specifications that have been given to you. We will be supervising the work regularly, issuing instructions and making variations when necessary. So we want you to work in accordance with the terms of the contract”, the Director added.
The contractor on his part assured Management and staff of his total commitment to deliver a good project.
