GCTU has made a remarkable 10-place jump in the latest Webometrics ranking of universities in Ghana, rising from 14th position in January 2026 to fourth position in the latest edition.
The dramatic rise places GCTU among Ghana’s top four universities, behind the University of Ghana, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) and the University of Cape Coast.
GCTU’s latest position also sees the technology-focused university move ahead of several well-established institutions, including the University for Development Studies (UDS), University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS), University of Education, Winneba (UEW), University of Energy and Natural Resources (UENR), University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA), Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA) and Ashesi University.
This development represents one of the most significant upward movements by a Ghanaian university in the latest ranking cycle and marks a major improvement in GCTU’s visibility within the country’s higher education landscape.
GCTU’s performance is even more striking at the global level.
The University has moved from a world ranking of 8,083 in January 2026 to 2,976 in the latest edition, representing an improvement of more than 5,000 places globally.
The Webometrics ranking evaluates universities using indicators that include Impact, Openness and Excellence, with the indicators intended to reflect aspects of a university’s web presence, visibility, research output and scholarly impact.
In the latest edition, GCTU recorded an Impact Rank of 1,737, an Openness Rank of 6,252 and an Excellence Rank of 2,111.
The results underscore the University’s growing digital and research visibility at a time when universities worldwide are increasingly being assessed not only by their physical presence but also by their contribution to the body of knowledge.
For GCTU, the latest ranking provides an opportunity to build on its growing visibility by strengthening research, expanding international partnerships and deepening collaboration with industry and other stakeholders.
