Ghana Communication Technology University (GCTU), in collaboration with Tarragon Edge Limited, has hosted a transformative youth bootcamp on September 19, 2023, at the Florence Onny Auditorium.

The event, organized by the Office of the Dean of Students and the Career Development Center, aimed at equipping GCTU students with essential skills and insights to thrive in the ever-evolving world of work.

The seminar, titled “Beyond the Certificate” (BTC), gathered students to engage in discussions and gain valuable knowledge on two significant topics: “Shift in the Mindset of Entrepreneurship” and “Getting Ready for the World of Work”.

The Lead Consultant of Tarragon Edge, Dr. Genevieve Pearl Duncan Obuobi, introduced the BTC Initiative and highlighted its primary focus on entrepreneurship. She encouraged students to explore opportunities within their environment to address societal needs and desires rather than fixating on traditional white-collar jobs. Dr. Obuobi also emphasized Tarragon Edge Limited’s mission to prepare undergraduates for the job market through seminars and webinars. She urged students to prioritize time management, develop a positive attitude, cultivate a sense of urgency, and enhance their networking and interpersonal skills.

A Human Capital Management Consultant, Dr. Kwame Annor, delivered a presentation on “Preparing for Work: Key Strategies to Know”. He stressed the importance of students understanding their strengths, weaknesses, interests and values while identifying long-term objectives and core principles. Dr. Annor also emphasized the need for students to prioritize skill development through problem-solving, critical thinking, time management, operational efficiency, and teamwork.

The CEO of Eagle Innovation, Ms. Winifred Kotin, discussed “Preparing for the Technology-Driven Changing Job Market”. She urged students to stay informed about technology trends, cultivate expertise in digital skills, and learn to work remotely and collaborate virtually.

The President of the African Chamber for Youth Development, Mr. John Appiah, focused on “Mindset and Attitude Beyond the Certificate”. He cautioned students that a certificate alone is not a guaranteed path to employment and emphasized the importance of gaining practical experience through internships, volunteer work, and national service.

The CEO of the Career Compass, Mr. Dickson Assan, shared insights on “Your Key Marketing Tools: CV, Profile & Cover Letter”. He urged students to leverage technology to enhance their personal value and encouraged them to focus on problem-solving and innovative solutions rather than dwelling on complaints.

The seminar host, Dean of Student Affairs, Dr. Michael Nana Owusu-Akomeah, emphasized the possibility of combining one’s field of study with skilled work and encouraged students to explore entrepreneurship if their current qualifications do not immediately lead to employment.

Earlier, the Head of Admissions and a Deputy Registrar at GCTU, Mr. Kwame Owusu-Ansah Afram, in a welcome address, emphasized the importance of students benefiting from the wisdom and experiences shared by seasoned resource persons. He also underscored the significance of dressing professionally as a means of personal expression, recounting a valuable lesson he learned from Hon. Papa Kwesi Nduom regarding the impact of personal presentation on how one is perceived.

Mr. Afram further emphasized the importance of knowledge, skills, and attitudes in securing employment. He encouraged students to apply what they had learnt in their future endeavours. He expressed gratitude to the organizers and resource persons.
