Ultra Modern Multipurpose Sports Complex Commissioned

The Vice-Chancellor of GCTU, Prof. Emmanuel Ohene Afoakwa has commissioned a newly-constructed multipurpose sports facility on January 21, 2024 at the main campus, Tesano.

Speaking at the commissioning, the Council Chair, Prof. Emeritus Kofi Awusabo-Asare noted that he had followed the gradual development of the complex and indicated, “at long last, it has been completed.” Prof. Awusabo-Asare charged the student body to ensure that the facility is always kept in good condition to serve the purpose for which it was built to benefit all.

Delivering his keynote address, the Vice-Chancellor expressed his utmost satisfaction with the facility and lauded the quality of work undertaken. He said “I am very excited that we are all here and what we saw on paper has come into reality and ready for use.”

He noted, that when the project was initiated and started, some people had the notion that it would take a lengthy time to be completed and others even thought it would not be possible, but with the good leadership under the Council Chair, it has materialized.

Prof. Afoakwa stated, “As we are all aware, we are admitting students yearly and the number keeps on increasing and we saw the need to put up a modern sports facility.” He referenced the adage, “that all work and no play, makes jack a dull boy.”

Consequently, the facility is an opportunity for students to exercise their bodies and exhibit their talents. He noted, that plans were far advanced to construct an eight-storey hostel facility to accommodate the increasing student numbers on campus.

The C.E.O. of Aeon Complex Limited, Mr. Peter Kwadwo Essie Mensah expressed his profound gratitude to the VC, Management and staff of GCTU for the project and looked forward to future opportunities to serve the University.

Earlier in his brief remarks, the Director of Works and Physical Development, Surv. Gordon A. Baapiri expressed appreciation to the Council Chair, VC and Management for the vision they have for the University. “The physical realization and manifestation for this vision is here for everybody to see,” he said. He emphasized, that the journey of this project started in 2021 when the VC proposed a modern sports complex in line with the vision and strategic goals of GCTU, focusing on students experience in the area of sports.

He noted that the project went through the procurement process and National Competitive Tendering. “The project was awarded to Aeon Complex Limited in 10thJanuary, 2023 and work commenced on February 8, 2023 and spanned a duration of 6 months,” he said.

The SRC President, Mr. Harrison Amoako, on behalf of the entire student body, extended his heartfelt gratitude to the Governing Council, Management and Staff of GCTU for their dedication and hard work to ensure students’ experience. He said, “Today marks a significant milestone in our University and it is with immense pride that I express our heartfelt appreciation to you for making this today possible.”

Among the notable features of the sports complex are a 220-seater capacity Astroturf football field, a basketball court, hockey pitch, netball and hand ball, table tennis courts and changing rooms.
