GCTU International Students, numbering 26, have embarked on a fascinating educational tour of the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority, Tema, on Thursday, 12th June 2025.
The tour, organized by the Industrial Liaison Department (ILD) in collaboration with the International Students Association, is part of the activities to mark their week-long celebration.
An Assistant Registrar at ILD, Mrs. Gloria Adelaide Sosu, who led the students, emphasized that one of the core mandates of ILD is to bridge the gap between academia and industry by taking students on industrial tours that help them familiarize themselves with industry operations.

A Marketing Clerk at the Marketing and Public Affairs Department, Mr. Emmanuel Larbie, who warmly welcomed the students, observed that the port was built and commissioned under the leadership of Ghana’s first President, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, in 1962. Mr. Larbie noted that GPHA offers four main services: vessel handling, stevedoring, shore handling and conservancy services.

Some of the highlights of the tour included exploring the Marine Creek Yard which offers a wide range of services for repairing, maintaining and refurbishing vessels. Mr. Larbie helped students appreciate the operations at Terminal 2 which include container handling, cargo management and the use of cranes for lifting. He also took students to the Tema Oil Refinery (TOR) Jetty, a special facility within the port where crude oil-carrying vessels discharge
their cargo which is then transported through pipelines to TOR for processing.
Mr. Larbie also elaborated on the crucial role of the Ghana National Fire Service team, who are present during discharge operations to respond quickly in case of a fire outbreak.
Mr. Larbie gave insights into GPHA’s security measures which include thorough searches of vehicles, people and goods, CCTV surveillance and close collaboration between GPHA security and other state security agencies such as National Security.
