GCTU Holds Maiden Interfaculty Sports Extravaganza
The maiden GCTU interfaculty sports competition organized recently by the SRC, in collaboration with the Office of the Dean of Student Affairs, was not just a resounding success, it was a spectacle of brain and brawn, that left spectators dazzled and competitors exhilarated.
The newly commissioned sports complex provided the perfect stage for this thrilling spectacle, as students from various faculties clashed in a display of sporting excellence, showcasing talents in various sporting disciplines including football, basketball, volleyball and table tennis.
The opening ceremony, a spectacle rivaling the Africa Games recently concluded in Accra, set the tone for the fierce, but friendly hostilities that ensued. With teams representing different faculties, the stakes were high and the energy palpable.
The competition yielded impressive results, with the Business School’s men’s football splitting into teams A & B, ultimately seeing team B emerge victorious. Meanwhile, the women’s Football was won by the Faculty of Computing & Information Systems (FoCIS).
In Volleyball, the Faculty of Engineering secured a decisive victory, while FoCIS, once again, demonstrated their dominance in Table Tennis. However, in an intense basketball showdown, the Faculty of Engineering emerged triumphant over FoCIS.
Speaking to the University media team after the games, the SRC President, Mr. Harrison Amoako, expressed his excitement for the inaugural organization of such an event within the academic calendar. He emphasized its importance as an opportunity to identify and cultivate sporting talent among the student body for potential participation in the forthcoming GUSA games.
The University Coach, Mr. Michael Justice Appea, underscored the significance of such competitions in discovering latent talents and enhancing students’ physical, mental, and psychological well-being.
He re-echoed the SRC President’s revelation that the event would also serve as a platform for selecting teams to represent the University in the upcoming GUSA games to be hosted by the University of Cape Coast. He explained that the criteria for selection would prioritize “skills, discipline, and commitment.”
