2023 GCTU Employee Welfare Fair Opens

The Employee Welfare Fair is organised by the Directorate of Human Resource and Organisational Development

GCTU’s annual Employee Welfare Fair meant to give staff of the university the opportunity to access their much needed services and products under one roof and at their convenience, has opened.

The 3-day fair which was opened on Wednesday, 29th March, is an initiative of the Directorate of Human Resource and Organization Development. The Fair brought together companies in the financial sector, food sector, real estate sector and electronic appliance companies among others.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Emmanuel Ohene Afoakwa, noted that the Employee Welfare Fair is very dear to his heart and the hearts of many people in GCTU. He opined that as an institution it is proper to do regular introspections into the things that happened in the past and the present to be able to prepare adequately for the eventualities of the future.

“Therefore, the welfare of the stakeholders within the institution – the largest being the students and the second largest being the staff – is crucial. We have already declared this year as the Student Experience year, but we are not just concentrating on only the students and leaving out everybody else.

“The staff who form a very big component of the university’s workforce are also being thought about in terms of their welfare and how as an institution we can support them based on past experiences.

“It is about putting measures in place to give them a better future as they work for this great institution”, the VC said.

Prof. Afoakwa further stated that the fair is just one of the measures taken to reach out to staff. Other measures he said include numerous training activities that have been set for the staff for the year. He noted that it was necessary to do the welfare fair so that “we can bring in services and products of those institutions we think will be important to give our staff a better future”.

Earlier, the Registrar, Mr. Emmanuel Baidoo, had his take on the age-old debate about what constitutes welfare for employees. The Registrar said welfare is not only about remuneration or money but includes good healthcare, improved conditions of service, on-the-job training, facilities, and the ambiance they work in. According to him “if all these are cared for, the employees will be happy, and the organization will achieve its aims and objectives”

Before cutting the tape to formally open the fair, Prof. Emmanuel Ohene Afoakwa, urged staff to actively participate in the fair over the three days and take advantage of what the institutions have on offer to make the effort beneficial to both parties.
