GCTU Holds Open Day For Prospective Students
The Ghana Communication Technology University (GCTU), in collaboration with Viala Premium Services has held an “Open Day” for prospective students on 20th October 2023 at the Florence Onny Auditorium.
The event, organized by the Recruitment Unit was designed to bring SHS graduates to identified centres including GCTU, Central University and Family Health Medical School to enable them receive first-hand information on academic programmes being offered by the institutions. It was also a rare opportunity for the various academic Departments to share their programmes and admission requirements with the prospective students to enable them to make informed choices about their preferred programmes and universities. Representatives from the various Departments, who participated in the programme, took turns to make presentations and interact with the prospective students.
In a welcome address, the Pro Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Robert Ebo Hinson, on behalf of the Vice-Chancellor extended advance “Akwaaba” to the prospective students. He urged them to recognize and take advantage of any opportunity at any juncture of their lives. “When you come, make good friends and let wisdom preserve your life.” he said.
The Chief Executive Officer, Viala Premium Services, Mr. Moses Albert Viala, paid a glowing tribute to the Management of GCTU for the collaboration and the opportunity to persuade prospective students to continue their academic journey with the University.
In a brief submission, the Dean of Students Affairs, Dr. Michael Nana Owusu-Akomeah, took the opportunity to emphasize one of GCTU’s core values, “student centered.” He added that, GCTU was the only University in which the Office of the Dean of Students operated a 24/7 open-door policy. Dr. Owusu-Akomeah urged the prospective students to apply to GCTU. He expressed gratitude to Management, organizers and Faculties/Departments for contributing to the success of the event.
The Head of Economics, Dr. Richard Kofi Asravor who started the series of presentations, informed the participants that his Department did not only teach Economics, but ensured that students got hands-on experience. He emphasized that his Department imbeds IT into Economics and added that, there were so many job prospects out there, citing that one could be an investment banker, data analyst and a research consultant. He added that, students could specialize in Petroleum Economics; Agriculture Economics and Environmental Economics.
The Head of Management Studies, Prof. Theresa Obuobisa-Darko, discussed the significant roles Management and HR played in human lives. “Every organization needs Human Resource, but you can get the best out of human beings if you manage them well,” she said. Prof Obuobisa-Darko stressed on the competent lecturers her Department had. She added that, GCTU’s core mandate is to train its students in Information Communication Technology so IT is imbedded in every programme of study. She urged the prospective students to apply to read Management Studies and HR. According to her, every organization needs someone who is competent, knowledgeable, skillful and has the ability to think and empathize.
The Head of Department for Mathematics and Statistics, Dr. Iddrisu Wahab Abdul, who represented the Faculty of Engineering, emphasized that the Faculty of Engineering is an outfit that solves problems, because they design, build and innovative. He mentioned the various Departments in the Faculty and their requirements. Dr. Iddrisu added that, Mathematics had a lot of real-life applications. “I know most of you don’t like Mathematics because of the misconceptions surrounding the subject.” he said. He encouraged them to choose Mathematics.
The Acting Head of Procurement, Logistics and Supply, Rev. Dr. Richard Amponsah, shared his experiences working in the industry and in the academia. He added that, every organization needed procurement officers, and professionals who had logistics skills because they need to ensure that contractual requirements are met, help to establish policies and get the best possible deals to save money.
The Head of Information Systems, Dr. Dominic Louis, said that GCTU is providing leadership in Ghana for studies in the area of Technology and Computing. He added that technology was changing the way things are being done including the human way of life. Dr. Louis said that his Faculty was set up to build new technology, implement, adapt, share, and secure technology. He added that Information Systems are about things that had been built into software so that businesses could use them to enhance their success and competitiveness.
The Department of General Studies was represented by Dr. Doreen Odame. She congratulated the prospective students for achieving the millstone of completing their WASSCE. She added that, her Department facilitates the core courses for all the programmes including African Studies, Sociology of Technology and French to help situate their programmes in their right contexts.
