The Acting Vice-Chancellor of the Ghana Communication Technology University (GCTU), Professor Ebenezer Malcalm, has announced that the University is doubling its infrastructure investment to strategically enhance excellence in teaching, learning, research and innovation.
He said construction of three hostel blocks, which will accommodate more than 6,000 students, is expected to begin this year, alongside the yet-to-be-commissioned eight-storey and six-storey lecture hall and office complexes. The facilities include an auditorium, a computer laboratory, and office spaces to complement the University’s existing infrastructure.
Speaking at the University’s special congregation ceremony held last Friday, Prof. Malcalm said these developments reflect the University’s unwavering commitment to supporting academic excellence and holistic student development.
The ceremony, themed “Shaping the Future: Innovation and Technology Education to Support Ghana’s Digital Economy,” witnessed 300 graduates who had completed all academic requirements of the University.
He expressed confidence that the construction of the state-of-the-art lecture hall and office complexes would provide a modern, conducive and inspiring environment that supports academic development.
“I am confident that GCTU will stand out as a beacon of modernity and progress in Ghana’s higher education landscape. I dare say, we will have one of the most sought-after educational campuses in Ghana, setting new standards for a typical modern university campus,” Prof. Malcalm stated.
He recounted that in 2020, when GCTU reached a pivotal moment to become a fully-fledged public institution through the passage of the GCTU Act 2020, (Act 1022), the transformation granted the University a mandate to lead Ghana’s digital agenda.
He added that this transformation is among the main reasons the University is investing heavily in providing top-notch infrastructure to support student development, especially in the area of Information Technology (IT).
The Acting VC said that the focus on IT and innovation has become the hallmark of the University’s vision, guiding strategies and ensuring it remains relevant in the increasingly digital world.
He highlighted that the University has achieved significant milestones affirming its position as a leader in ICT education in Ghana, including the introduction of cutting-edge programmes.
He mentioned that the PhD, Master’s, Bachelor’s and Diploma programmes were designed to meet the changing demands of the digital economy and to foster a generation of tech-oriented students well-equipped to address real-world challenges.
Prof. Malcalm emphasised that beyond infrastructure, the University remains committed to implementing student and staff-centred policies and initiatives that advance the University’s vision of becoming the Silicon Valley of Africa.
The keynote speaker, the Executive Director of the Data Protection Commission, Dr Arnold Kavaarpuo, challenged students of GCTU to develop technological software capable of solving human problems.
He stated that GCTU, recognised as one of the most prestigious universities, must become integral to the implementation framework for software development in Ghana.
