Report On The 2024 Tree-planting Exercise At Besiase Amanfrom

Introduction

The annual tree-planting exercise, a vital part of the Ghana Communication Technology University’s commitment to environmental sustainability, was successfully held this year at Besiase Amanfrom near Aburi on the 1st of August, 2024. This report details the events of the day, the progress made, and the outcomes of the exercise

Overview of the 2024 Event

This year’s tree-planting exercise was particularly notable for its high level of participation and the enthusiasm exhibited by the attendees. The event saw the active involvement of over thirty (30) undergraduate students, five (5) post-graduate students and five (5) faculty members including Nana Agyeman-Prempeh, Prof. Frank Sackey, Dr. Emmanuel Freeman, Dr. Eric Ekobor-Ackah Mochiah, Dr. Ruhiya Abubakar, all of whom share a deep interest in sustainable development and environmental conservation. Their collective efforts were crucial in ensuring the success of the exercise.

The event was organized and led by the P-learn Centre for Industrial Research and Innovation, under the leadership of Nana Agyeman-Prempeh. The team, driven by their commitment to promoting environmental stewardship, coordinated with the Chiefs and people of Besiase Amanfrom to commence the project. The collaboration with the local community was instrumental in the smooth execution of the exercise.

Tree-Planting Activity

The tree-planting exercise was a resounding success, with over 1,500 trees being planted across various designated areas in Besiase Amanfrom. The species chosen for planting were carefully selected to suit the local environment, with a focus on promoting biodiversity and restoring degraded areas.

The students and faculty members worked in teams, planting saplings, and ensuring that each was properly placed to maximize its chances of survival. The enthusiasm of the participants was palpable, and the collective effort contributed significantly to the progress made throughout the day.

Follow-Up Visit to Oboadaka

Following the tree-planting activity at Besiase Amanfrom, the P-learn Centre for Industrial Research and Innovation team visited Oboadaka, the site of last year’s tree-planting exercise. The visit was aimed at assessing the progress of the trees planted in 2023.

The inspection revealed that over 80% of the trees planted last year are growing well. This high survival rate is a testament to the careful planning and execution of the planting exercise, as well as the ongoing efforts to maintain and nurture the saplings. The success at Oboadaka provides valuable insights and lessons that will inform future tree-planting initiatives.

Conclusion

The 2024 tree-planting exercise at Besiase Amanfrom was an overwhelming success, thanks to the dedication and hard work of the P-learn Team, GCTU Management, students, faculty members, and the local community. The planting of over 1,500 trees is a significant contribution to environmental conservation efforts in the region.

The positive results from the follow-up visit to Oboadaka underscore the importance of continued monitoring and maintenance to ensure the long-term success of these initiatives. The P-learn Centre for Industrial Research and Innovation remains committed to promoting sustainable development and will continue to lead such impactful activities in the future.
