The Institute of Continuing and Distance Education (ICDE), GCTU has organized a one-day orientation for newly-admitted undergraduate students on February 13, 2026, via zoom.
The event aimed to introduce new students to the University’s academic environment, policies and support systems, equip them with the knowledge needed to succeed in their programmes and prepare them for their academic journey.
Delivering his welcome address, the Acting Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ebenezer Malcalm, welcomed the students on behalf of the Vice-Chancellor and Management.
He emphasized the need for students to take advantage of the University’s academic freedom by interacting with colleagues, faculty members, staff and the wider University community. He further encouraged them to work closely with the SRC executives and the Office of the Dean of Student Affairs to channel their concerns and access the support they need throughout their academic journey.
The Head of the Institute of Continuing and Distance Education (ICDE), Dr. Frank Senyo Loglo, delivered a presentation on the theme ”ICDE in Perspective: Breaking Barriers through Distance Learning.” He elaborated on what it means to be a student of GCTU, enrolled in the ICDE programme and explained the philosophy behind distance education.
He noted that distance education at GCTU is a carefully-designed programme aimed at meeting the needs of the economy through a technology-driven learning platform. He added that lecturers are trained to use these technologies effectively to ensure that no student is left behind and that everyone has the opportunity to pursue higher education.
He concluded by urging students to take responsibility for their learning, be self-motivated and disciplined, participate fully in all learning activities, stay in touch with their facilitators and programme administrators and ask all the necessary questions to prepare themselves for an exciting academic journey.
Students were also taken through the semester schedule and the mode of delivery, as well as how to balance academic work and social life, with strong emphasis on the formation of study groups.
The Head of Financial Accounting and Reporting, Rev. Lewi Amanor Agbozo, guided students through the financial requirements, clearly outlining procedures and deadlines for fee payments, as well as other essential financial obligations they are expected to fulfil during their studies at GCTU.
The orientation programme climaxed in an interactive question-and-answer session where students had the opportunity to seek clarification, provide feedback and contribute to discussions, ensuring they were well-informed and equipped for their academic journey.
