Industrial Liaison Department Facilitates Diverse Educational Experiences for GCTU Students
In a bid to bridge the gap between classroom learning and real-world application, the Industrial Liaison Department has orchestrated a series of enriching industrial visits for Engineering and Foreign students.
The excursions which took place in the months of August and September 2023, were aimed at providing students with invaluable insights and practical experiences related to their fields of study. Here are some noteworthy encounters facilitated by the Industrial Liaison Department:
Exploring Broadcasting and Connectivity Technologies at K-NET
On August 21, 2023, Engineering students, guided by the Industrial Liaison Department, explored K-NET, gaining invaluable insights into broadcasting and connectivity technologies. Deputy CTO Mr. Richard J. Hlomador elucidated on technologies, including Digital Terrestrial Television (DTT) and Internet of Things (IoT).
Discussions on satellite teleport operations and the collaborative nature of the industry highlighted K-NET’s commitment to innovation and bridging digital divides. The visit provided students with a comprehensive understanding of the dynamic world of broadcasting technologies.
Exploring the Cosmos at Ghana Radio Astronomy Observatory (GRAO)
On August 24, 2023, the Engineering students again embarked on a captivating journey to the Ghana Radio Astronomy Observatory (GRAO) near Nsawam. Organized by the Department of Industrial Liaison Department in collaboration with the Engineering Students Association, the visit allowed students to delve into the complexities of celestial radio frequencies. Led by an Observatory Engineer and Astronomer, Dr. Naomi Asabre Frimpong, students explored satellite sites, a stellar nursery, and the iconic 32-meter telescope.
This experience not only broadened their understanding of astronomy but also sparked a newfound passion for unraveling the mysteries of the cosmos.
From Theory to Practice: Kasapreko Company Operations
In September 2023, the Department, in collaboration with the Engineering Students Association, facilitated a visit to Kasapreko Company Limited for 95 engineering students.
Through a guided tour, students witnessed the practical application of their studies in a real-world manufacturing context. The tour provided insights into the production of Choco Malt drinks, emphasizing quality control measures at every stage. This firsthand exposure left an indelible imprint on the students’ engineering perspectives, showcasing the importance of bridging academic knowledge with industrial practices.
Touring NCA Facilities
In September 2023, the Engineering Students Association toured the National Communications Authority-CERT, the Common Platform, and the Broadcasting Monitoring Center. The visit aimed to connect classroom lessons with industrial knowledge, offering students firsthand insights into spectrum management, licensing, and cyber security. The tour emphasized the practical applications of theoretical concepts and showcased the strategic deployment of Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) in monitoring FM/TV stations.
International Students Navigate IELTS with British Council
Finally, the Department oversaw a visit by the International Students from GCTU to the British Council also in September 2023. The visit provided the International Students with a direct understanding of the International English Language Testing System (IELTS).
The British Council Team guided the students through the meticulous procedures and protocols involved in taking the test, equipping them with confidence and clarity. Additionally, the session shed light on sponsorship opportunities for National Service recruitment and internships, essential for their transition into the workforce platform.
These industrial visits not only enhance students’ understanding of their fields but also cultivate a passion for lifelong learning and innovation. The Industrial Liaison Department remains committed to providing students with diverse and enriching experiences throughout their educational journey.
