233 Students Graduate at 23rd Congregation
GTUC played host to its 23rd Congregation ceremony on Saturday, 3rd August, 2019. The event provided a stage for the conferment of both Graduate and Undergraduate degrees and saw a total of 233 students being awarded.
In attendance were an array of staff, faculty and management members, as well as a host of special guests and dignitaries. Among these, were a representative of the KNUST Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Joseph Sarkodie-Adu, Mr. Keith Bissett, a representative from our most established partner, Coventry University and a representative from the National Accreditation Board. In addition, the ceremony was graced by the presence of the Minister for the Western Region, Hon. Kwabena Okyere Darko-Mensah, who served as the keynote speaker for the event. The Honorable minister delivered an inspiring message which centered on the theme for the Congregation, “Becoming a Productive Graduate: Entrepreneurship and Technology in National Development”.
In his address, the Honorable Minister alluded to the endless opportunities that lay ahead of the graduants by virtue of the education they had been fortunate to receive, quoting Malcolm X who stated, “ Education is the passport to the future, for tomorrow belongs to those who prepare for it today” In reference to theme for the Congregation, the Minister emphasized the burgeoning developmental potential that the nation possesses, stating that for it to be maximized, there should be a major focus on the “education of the youth in a manner which will see them become direct agents of our nation’s development”.
In his traditional update regarding the current state of the University, the Acting President, Prof. Emmanuel Ohene Afoakwa, addressed the Congregation and threw light on the University’s imminent transition to public status, stating that the passage of the Bill was drawing nearer and nearer towards becoming a reality. Speaking to the graduants, the Ag. President urged them to always endeavor to “challenge the status quo”, pointing to the need for them to refuse to accept things as they are, always looking to question what lay in front of them and innovate at every opportunity.
The Overall best student for the 23rd Congregation Ceremony was Barbara Anne Defortse, an M.Sc Engineering Project Management student, who apart from claiming the best student award, also managed to produce the best thesis among all the graduate students. During her address on behalf of her fellow graduants, Ms. Defortse acknowledged the efforts of staff, faculty and management alike for making their achievements possible, as well as pointing out how fortunate they all were to be graduating on the day.
