GCTU Holds 24th Congregation Ceremony
November 30th, 2019 saw the occasion of GTUC’s 24th Congregation ceremony for both undergraduate and graduate students. The event, which was held at the Forecourt, saw a total of 1243 students being awarded with their various Bachelors, Masters and PhD degrees.
Along with staff and management of the University, the Congregation was attended by some Council members, a KNUST representative in the person of the Pro-Vice Chancellor, Prof Rita Akosua Dickson and Prof. Charles Barnor, the Pro-Vice Chancellor of UPSA. In addition, the ceremony was graced by representatives from some of our international partners, namely; Prof. John Latham, the Vice-Chancellor of Coventry University, UK and Prof. Cornelia Scott, the Vice-Dean and MBA Program Director at Anhalt University, Germany.
The Guest speaker for the event was Prof. Yaw Agyeman Badu, the former Rector of GIMPA, who gave an inspiring address centred on the theme for the Congregation, “Becoming a Public University: Expectations and Responsibilities of GTUC for Ghana’s Economic Development”
During his address, Prof. Badu alluded to the fact that, in as much as students should appreciate the value of what they learnt in the classroom, there is a need for them to engage in practical development. According to Prof Badu, “Now, there needs to be a greater emphasis on the practical aspects of education, an education that will prepare graduates for the real world”. The Guest speaker also made reference to the importance of bridging the gap between the academic world and the professional environment in the pursuit of advanced National development, commending GTUC for its initiative in establishing a Centre for Professional Development.
The Congregation was also addressed by the Prof. Emmanuel Ohene Afoakwa, the GTUC President, who gave his traditional update on the University’s status. Prof. Afoakwa threw light on the Passage of the GTU Bill which would see the University acquire fully-fledged public status, informing the attendants that it had been gazetted and listed for parliament’s consideration
The President encouraged the graduands in his address, urging them to never give up in the face of adversity, saying “As you launch out into the world with your ideas, business plans, and market-conquest offerings, my message to all of you is the same; pursue your passion even though the path may sometimes seem winding and difficult.” He closed his address by thanking the staff at GTUC for their continuous and fervent efforts in ensuring that the University continues to progress and achieve its goals.
The Overall Best Student for this graduation was Mr. Raphael Kweku Segbefia, a B.Sc Information Technology student and in his address to his fellow graduands he payed homage to the efforts of lecturers, staff and management alike for maintaining the high standards that accompany education at GTUC.
Overall, the event proved to be a successful one and we congratulate our various Graduates on their outstanding achievements.
