GTUC commissions construction of artificial football turf
Monday 7th October, 2019 marked a historic day as GTUC saw the official commissioning of the construction of the University’s very own artificial football turf. The commissioning of the project, which is to be completed in December, is to be undertaken by Wembley Sports Construction Company and signals the culmination of almost 5 years of collaboration, deliberation and planning on behalf of the Student’s representative Council, the Student Affairs Unit led by their Head, Mrs. Evelyn Asiedu, the Procurement Unit, and crucially, management.
Speaking at the event, the SRC President, Ms. Pamela Mantey Aboagyewaa, thanked management, in particular the acting President, Prof. Emmanuel Ohene Afoakwa, for the dedication to the project and commended them for showing a commitment to enhancing the lives of students on campus. She went on to add that she was confident that this would be the start of even greater things to come and communicated her excitement at what the future would hold.
In attendance at the event were members of management including Dr .Mrs. Juliana Owusu-Ansah, the Registrar and Prof. Isaac Abeku Blankson, the Vice-President, as well as several members of staff and also a number of former SRC Presidents. In his address to those gathered, the Acting President, Prof. Afoakwa, reiterated the significance of the project, emphasizing the importance of supplementing academic pursuits with extra-curricular activities, citing this as one of the main driving forces behind the decision to commence work on this groundbreaking initiative. During his address, the Acting President also informed attendants that attention would soon be turned towards the construction of a new hostel complex that would cater to the increasing number of students on campus. A representative from Wembley Sports Construction Company, Mr. Nana Antwi , was also on hand to assure the University community that the project would be undertaken with maximum efficiency and expertise and that the materials being used for the turf were of the highest, most modern quality.
On behalf of the University Community, we would like to commend Management on their decision to commence with this project, and also congratulate the SRC, Student Affairs and the Procurement Unit on making this dream a reality. We all look forward to the unveiling of the new artificial turf in a few months time and we are confident that this is just the tip of the iceberg as GTUC continues to grow in stature.
