Isabella Abraham-Basil, a Level 400 Computer Engineering student, has become the second student from Ghana Communication Technology University (GCTU) to win the prestigious Telecel Female Engineering Students Scholarship Programme Award (FESSPA).
Isabella was among 10 outstanding female students from five selected public universities who were honoured at the 11th edition of the awards ceremony held recently at the Telecel Head Office in Accra.
In a brief remark at the event, the Chief Executive Officer, Patricia Obo-Nai, expressed her delight at the achievements of the scholarship recipients. “We’re very excited to have you join us. This programme has produced many successful professionals and we look forward to seeing what you will achieve,” she said. She encouraged the students to ask questions and engage fully with the opportunities provided.
Earlier in an overview presentation on FESSPA, the Human Resource Director, Mrs. Hannah Ashiokai Akrong, stated that the programme is “… a very important day for us,” especially having the presence of their executive team to support the selected bright students.
She emphasized the importance of attitude and behaviour in the professional world, saying, “Skill, you can learn, but attitude is everything. It’s the key to success here at Telecel.”
The scholarship package included the provision of the latest tablets, 10gig of data a month for six months and a stipend of 5,000 Ghana cedis. Winners could also access Telecel’s extensive mentorship and training programmes expected to provide them with invaluable industry experience as well as undertake their national service with Telecel. “You get to work on cutting-edge projects, and the exposure is something that you should be very proud of,” the MC of the event remarked.
The Dean of the Engineering Faculty at GCTU, Dr. Ruhiya Abubakar, shared her excitement and gratitude. “I want to say a very big thank you. It’s a very special initiative that bridges the gap between academia and industry. We are proud to see our students excelling and receiving such recognition.”
Isabella’s accomplishment is a testament to her hard work and the quality of education at GCTU. Her achievement not only brings pride to her family and GCTU but also sets a precedence for emulation by continuing and future students.
The event was a significant moment for GCTU, highlighting its commitment to creating an environment where female engineers can thrive and achieve their fullest potential in their academic and professional journeys.
