GTUC takes part in Ghana Gas Challenge

GTUC Contingent

Following the launch of the Ghana Gas Challenge in May 2019, Ghana Technology University College was fortunate enough to be nominated to take part in the Tertiary edition of the competition, which has a specific focus on institutions providing academic courses that relate to the oil and gas industry. The initiative, which was launched by the Ghana National Gas Company, was borne out of the need to give the public and relevant stakeholders an increased insight into the operations of the gas industry in Ghana, as well broaden the understanding of individuals in academia, the media, and the general gas sector stakeholder community.

The SRC came through with their support

The competition was carried out in a quiz format, and saw GTUC come up against Regional Maritime University, as well as the University of Ghana, who played host to this particular leg of the contest. GTUC was represented by three students who are currently enrolled in the Coventry University affiliated MBA Petroleum Economics and Finance programme and were coached and mentored by Dr. Riverson Oppong, currently an adjunct lecturer on the programme. The three students, namely; Kenneth Yaw Boahen, Kwamina Abaka-Kwansa and Endesha Serwaa Amanquah were put through their paces as they were quizzed on a wide range of topics relating broadly to the local gas sector. The contestants performed admirably, acquitting themselves with an exemplary level of mastery over the subject area and a calm, considered approach which not only served as a credit to themselves for all their hard work and effort, but also to the University and their coach Dr. Riverson Oppong, whose time, dedication and expertise were largely mirrored in their performance.

Cheered on by a large contingent of GTUC support, led by the GTUC Vice-President, Prof. Isaac Abeku Blankson, and Dr. Esther Asiedu, the Phd Chair at the Graduate School, the GTUC team managed to carve a healthy lead for themselves early on, answering all questions that were posed to them with a degree of confidence and accuracy that shook their competitors to the core. The lead, which lasted until the last round, was unfortunately lost as the University of Ghana, with their staunch home support, managed to overtake our team and put themselves in a rather fortunate lead as they won the round and secured their place in the next part of the competition; the GTUC team eventually finished in second place ahead of Regional Maritime University.

Despite not being able to win this particular edition, we are exceedingly proud of the team and would like to give special mentions to them and their coach for the meticulous preparation that led them to such an exceptional performance and the commendable way in which they projected the GTUC brand. We are confident that we will scale even greater heights during the next edition and we look forward to garnering even greater support as we look to bring the trophy home in a year’s time!
