The Former Second Lady, Mrs. Samira Bawumia, has stated that the future belongs to those who have the courage to create it.
The Former Second Lady made the statement while delivering the keynote address at the National Young Women Leaders’ Summit held on 19th June 2026 at GCTU.
Organised by the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) and hosted by GCTU, the Summit was held under the theme “Shaping the Future Through Female Leadership, Advocacy and Innovation.”

A major highlight of the Summit was the official launch of the NUGS Women Podcast, which was formally declared launched by the keynote speaker, Mrs. Bawumia, following her compelling address to participants at the early part of the event.
In her speech, Mrs. Bawumia encouraged young women to believe in their abilities, pursue leadership boldly and refuse to be limited by fear or self-doubt. “Confidence doesn’t arrive before opportunity. Very often, confidence comes because you said yes to an opportunity, especially those that scared you,” she stated.
Addressing the gathering of students, staff and invited guests, Mrs. Bawumia described the summit as more than just another event, noting that it was “a statement that says your voices matter, your dreams matter, your leadership matters.”
She urged participants to embrace leadership not merely as a position or title, but as an opportunity to make meaningful impact in society. According to her, leadership begins with responsibility, integrity and the willingness to create solutions.

Speaking on advocacy, she highlighted the importance of using one’s voice to inspire change and champion causes that matter. She commended the launch of the NUGS Women Podcast, describing conversations as powerful tools capable of transforming lives and shaping mindsets. “One conversation can inspire confidence. One conversation can change mindsets. And one conversation can change a life,” she remarked.
Mrs. Bawumia also challenged young women to take advantage of technological advancements and innovation opportunities available in today’s world. She encouraged them to acquire new skills, build solutions, create jobs and contribute meaningfully to national development.
“As I look at all of you today, I have absolutely no doubt that many future leaders, innovators and changemakers are seated in this hall,” she said.
The event brought together young people, especially women and student leaders from some institutions in the country for a day of inspiration, empowerment and meaningful dialogue on leadership and national development.
The event was attended by members of the GCTU community including the Council Chairman, Ing. Divine Kpetigo, Deans, Directors, staff and students of the University, as well as representatives from NUGS and other distinguished guests.
