The Directorate of Quality Assurance and Promotion (DQAP) at GCTU has organised a two-day workshop for the University’s three faculties to strengthen teaching standards, enhance academic quality and improve staff performance.
The workshop, held at the CITSET Lab on the University’s main campus at Tesano, Accra, on Tuesday, October 27, 2026, brought together Deans and Heads of Departments (HoDs) to deepen their understanding of the University’s quality assurance framework, Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) standards and accreditation requirements for academic staff, teaching and learning.

It also covered assessment and examination integrity, staff performance appraisal, professional ethics and conduct, compliance with staff records and qualification requirements, research and publications and staff development.

Speaking at the workshop, the Acting Director of the DQAP at the University, Professor Eric Amankwah, said the initiative was designed to clarify the roles of Deans and HODs, as they were the first line of quality assurance within their respective faculties and departments. According to him, the session was to strengthen the capacity of functionaries of the DQAP in data management, documentation, planning and institutional quality assurance.
He stressed that the Directorate’s primary objective was to promote a culture of quality preparedness among academic staff to ensure that students received high-quality teaching and an improved learning experience.

“HODs are responsible for managing departmental affairs and ensuring that lecturers adhere to established teaching standards. They must supervise their staff to ensure that both lecturers and students fulfil their respective academic responsibilities,” he said.
Professor Amankwah further noted that quality university education requires clear standards and effective supervision, with students as primary beneficiaries. He stressed that lecturers are central to service delivery and teaching quality determines University success.

The Resource Person for the workshop, Dr. Kofi Ashiboe-Mensah, Director of Exam Ethics at Mashals International, said the training was aimed at helping GCTU maintain high educational standards by focusing on the quality of services provided to students.

He explained that students’ experience and the quality of education received were key measures of the University’s performance, noting that the workshop would well position HODs and Deans to assess lecturers’ consistency, the relevance of information provided and the overall quality of instruction.
Referring to GCTU’s vision, mission and core values, he said the University’s ambition to become a world-class institution in Information and Communication Technology required a collective commitment from all academic leaders and staff.

He therefore urged Deans and HoDs to identify and implement specific actions that would support the achievement of the University’s vision, stressing that “all departmental activities and decisions should align with the University’s established mission, vision and core values to promote academic excellence
