
A GCTU Sports Contingent, led by the Director of Sports, Dr. Emmanuel Yaw Asaasie, has successfully participated in the recently held Ghana Universities Sports Association (GUSA) Minor Games and Cross-Country Race Competitions hosted by the University of Environment and Sustainable Development (UESD) in Somanya, from 27th October to 2nd November 2025.
The performance of the Contingent, which was made up of 15 athletes, 2 student leaders and 3 officials, left a significant impression at the event for which some medals were won, lifting the GCTU brand high.
The University’s contingent competed in multiple disciplines, including the men and women’s cross-country, chess and scrabble events in which the women’s team placed 5th overall in the cross-country events, while the men’s team finished 8th overall, demonstrating significant improvement in endurance and teamwork compared to previous editions of the competition.

In the indoor games, GCTU recorded commendable performances. The men’s scrabble player, Mensah Reynolds, won a bronze medal, marking an important achievement in the University’s participation in GUSA competitions. Similarly, the men’s chess player, Philemon Awuah Nabare. also secured a bronze medal, while the women’s chess player, Veronica Afua Daddah, placed 5th overall, showcasing impressive strategic skills and determination.
The University’s performance reflects continuous growth in sporting excellence and commitment to holistic student development. The Sports Directorate extends appreciation to the University Management for its unwavering support and to the athletes and officials for their dedication and discipline throughout the competition.
Overall, GCTU’s participation in the GUSA Minor Games and Cross Country at UESD was successful and promising, highlighting the University’s potential to achieve greater heights in future GUSA events.
