The Flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and former Vice President of Ghana, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has extended support to students of GCTU who were severely affected by the devastating floods that hit parts of Accra on June 29, 2026.

The floods, triggered by torrential rains across the capital, displaced several students living in hostels and private residences around the University, particularly in Alajo, Adabraka, the Industrial Area and surrounding communities. Many students reportedly lost valuable personal belongings, including laptops, mobile devices, food supplies, mattresses and other essential items critical to their academic work and daily living.

In response to the situation, GCTU Management swiftly intervened by providing temporary accommodation on campus and offering feeding support to stranded students. The University subsequently appealed to corporate bodies, institutions and individuals to assist affected students in rebuilding their lives.

Responding to this call, Dr. Bawumia dispatched a delegation from his office, led by the Member of Parliament for Akuapem North and Advisor to the former Vice President, Hon. Sammy Awuku, to donate relief items to support the affected students.

Various items were received from the NPP Presidential Candidate

Presenting the items on behalf of Dr. Bawumia, Hon. Sammy Awuku expressed sympathy to the students and the University community over the impact of the floods.

“His office received requests from students who had been displaced and affected by the floods, and he felt it was important to support the University community,” Hon. Awuku stated.

He explained that the donation included bottled water, biscuits, rice, cooking oil, canned mackerel, tomato products, drinks and other food supplies intended to alleviate the immediate hardship faced by the students.

“At moments like this, we have to hold each other down. Even though some students had directly reached out to his office, His Excellency believed the support should go beyond the list submitted to him,” he added.

Hon. Awuku further assured the University that the support would not be a “one-day wonder,” indicating that Dr. Bawumia’s office would continue to mobilise assistance for the affected students and the wider university community.

During an interaction with the affected students, Hon. Sammy Awuku encouraged them not to lose hope despite the difficult circumstances and urged them to continue supporting one another as a family.

Prof. Malcalm receiving the items on behalf of Management

Receiving the donation on behalf of the University, Acting Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ebenezer Malcalm, expressed profound gratitude to Dr. Bawumia for the timely intervention and support.

“On behalf of the Governing Council and Senior Management, we want to express our sincere gratitude to Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia for this kind gesture,” Prof. Malcalm said.

He disclosed that the floods had significantly disrupted academic activities, forcing the University to suspend normal classes temporarily while emergency arrangements were made for displaced students.

“Many students lost their laptops, handheld devices and other learning tools. We had to relocate some of them onto campus to provide a safe haven and support them through the trauma they experienced,” he noted.

Prof. Malcalm added that the University had also mobilised internal resources to provide emergency assistance to students, stressing that the donation from Dr. Bawumia would go a long way in easing the burden on affected students.

The SRC President, Mr. Sarfo, expressing appreciation on behalf of the affected students

The SRC President, Nathaniel Kwesi Sarfo, speaking on behalf of the student body, expressed appreciation to the former Vice President and his team for the support shown to students during the difficult period.

“When things like this happen, we must put politics aside and come together as one people to support each other. We are very grateful for this gesture,” he stated.

The Dean of Students making an appeal for more donations to alleviate the plight of the students

The Dean of Students, Prof. Emelia Amoako Asiedu, also commended the intervention and appealed for additional support, particularly technological tools such as laptops and handheld devices needed by students to continue their academic work.

“Most of them lost the tools they use for learning and it has been very difficult for them. We are grateful for the food items and support but we also appeal for assistance with technological devices and other essentials,” she said.
