1,103 graduates as Vice-Chancellor urge graduates to embrace opportunities

On Saturday, July 14th, 2024, the Ghana Communication Technology University (GCTU) celebrated its 33rd congregation ceremony, marking a significant milestone in the institution’s history.

A total of 1,103 graduates received their degrees, including 12 PhDs, 110 and 10 dedicated scholars who have successfully earned their master’s degrees under Coventry and Anhalt universities respectively, and 971 undergraduate degrees.

The Minister of Education, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, who was the guest speaker at the ceremony, extended his warm congratulations to the graduating class of 2022-2023. He acknowledged the dedication and hard work that had brought them to this milestone.

Dr. Adutwum emphasized the significance of ICT in empowering students and bridging the digital divide. He highlighted the government’s efforts to provide equal access to technology and digital tools, ensuring that every student has the opportunity to thrive in the digital age.

The minister also showcased government’s initiatives to upgrade junior high schools and provide modern education infrastructure, stressing the importance of 21st-century education being held in 21st-century buildings.

Addressing the impact of the fourth industrial revolution on the job market, Dr. Adutwum acknowledged the potential loss of 85 million jobs but emphasized the creation of 97 million new jobs. He encouraged the graduates to develop the skills and innovation needed to thrive in this new era. “Become innovators, creators, and critical thinkers,” he urged, “using your knowledge and skills to drive economic growth and development in Ghana.”

Vice-Chancellor Professor Emmanuel Ohene Afoakwa also congratulated the graduates on their achievements, urging them to embrace the opportunities that come their way.

“Embrace the honorable opportunities that come your way, illuminate the path with your acquired skills and knowledge, and remember to uphold the image of your alma mater,” he advised.

Professor Afoakwa highlighted GCTU’s achievements, including the recent approval of new postgraduate programs and the establishment of a technology hub. He emphasized the university’s commitment to providing diverse and robust education in technology and engineering, reflecting GCTU’s mission to be a cornerstone of technological and engineering education in Ghana.

The Vice-Chancellor praised the graduates for their hard work and dedication, noting that their presence at the ceremony was a testament to their perseverance and determination. He encouraged them to continue to strive for excellence, to be innovative and creative, and to make a positive impact in their respective fields.

Professor Afoakwa also acknowledged the contributions of the university’s faculty and staff, expressing his appreciation for their dedication and commitment to excellence, which have helped shape the academic landscape of the university.

Mr. Nana Kwasi Kufour a graduand in Business Administration student delivered the valedictory address on behalf of the graduates. He noted that many of them had experienced various challenges in the course of their studies, and was grateful that despite the the obstacles, they had been able to sail through and were graduating successfully. On behalf of the graduating class, he thanked all who contributed in various ways to their success.

He urged his fellow graduating students to make it their aim to influence the world positively, wherever they may find themselves.

As part of the ceremony, academic awards were presented to outstanding graduating students.
