GCTU has once again distinguished itself on the national stage, emerging as the winner in the “Best Audit Committee for Tertiary Institutions” category at the 2025 Annual Internal Audit Conference held on from 3rd to 4th November 2025 at the Accra International Conference Centre.
The prestigious two-day conference, which was organized by the Internal Audit Agency (IAA), was themed “Resetting the Ghanaian Economy: The Role of the Internal Auditor.” The event brought together audit professionals, organizations and internal audit units from across the country to deliberate on how the profession can contribute to strengthening accountability and economic recovery in Ghana.

As part of the closing ceremony on Day 2, the IAA recognized institutions, units, and individuals that had demonstrated exceptional performance, integrity and adherence to ethical standards in the performance of their auditing responsibilities.
Among the key award categories was Institutional Excellence, which honoured high-performing Internal Audit Units across Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs); Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs); State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs); and Tertiary Institutions.
In the fiercely contested Best Audit Committee for Tertiary Institutions category, GCTU emerged as the overall winner, ahead of the Presbyterian College of Education, Akropong and the Accra Technical University (ATU), who placed first and second runners-up respectively.
A team from the Internal Audit Directorate, led by the Director, Mr. Kennedy Oppong Fosu, received the award on behalf of the University.
Presentation to the Vice-Chancellor

Following the awards ceremony, the Internal Audit Directorate formally presented the award to the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Emmanuel Ohene Afoakwa, in a brief ceremony in his office.
Prof. Afoakwa expressed his excitement for the honour and lauded the Audit Committee and the Directorate for their steadfast dedication, hard work, and professionalism. He assured them of Management’s continuous support to ensure that GCTU remains fully compliant with all laws, regulations, and policies governing the University.
“This recognition is not only a testament to the professionalism of our Audit Committee but also a reflection of our collective commitment to the University’s core values of integrity, innovation, and excellence,” he remarked.
The Audit Committee
The GCTU Audit Committee – currently serving its second term – has, over the past four years, distinguished itself as a strong pillar of institutional accountability. The Committee is composed of seasoned and highly respected professionals:

Their combined expertise has provided robust oversight, strategic direction, and advisory leadership that have fortified the University’s governance structures and internal control systems. Their work has strengthened accountability mechanisms, improved management decision-making, and ensured that GCTU remains aligned with national financial and audit regulatory requirements.

Speaking after the presentation, the Director of Internal Audit expressed heartfelt appreciation to the Vice-Chancellor and University Management for their unwavering support.
