The Acting Pro Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ebenezer Malcalm, has commissioned the refurbished lecture rooms of the Faculty of Computing and Information Systems (FoCIS), Block ‘C’, during a brief ceremony held on July 17, 2025.
The refurbishment, spearheaded by the Association of Computing Students (ACS), included the following upgrades:
- Installation of advanced PA systems – including mixers, amplifiers, speakers, and lapel microphones – in lecture halls C14 and C15.
- Fitting of curtains in C14, C15, C16, C17 and the ACS Lab to reduce distractions
- Complete repainting of lecture halls C14 and C15

Speaking at the event, the Acting Pro. VC, on behalf of the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Emmanuel Ohene Afoakwa, expressed his excitement about the initiative, noting that it will enhance the University’s facilities, particularly benefiting the Faculty. He lauded the great gesture of ACS as a contribution towards the achievement of the VC’s ambitious agenda to transform GCTU into the “Silicon Valley” of Ghana, akin to the innovation hub in the USA, by 2030. Prof. Malcalm urged other student associations to follow ACS’s lead in contributing to the University’s development, specifically by expanding facilities.

Giving his remarks, the Dean of the FoCIS, Dr. William Leslie Brown-Acquaye commended the ACS for their initiative to give back to the university community. He further applauded the ACS leadership for utilizing funds responsibly and channeling them toward meaningful projects.

The ACS President, William Turkson Sam, indicated that the idea behind the project is to create an environment where learning becomes more comfortable, efficient and inspiring for every student under FoCIS. He elaborated that under his leadership, over 80 students have been trained in practical skills like CCTV installation, access control and video intercom systems. “This is the future we are preparing for. A future where our students are not just consumers of knowledge, but creators and implementers of solutions,” he said.

He expressed his heartfelt appreciation to the Dean, lecturers, Faculty members and student volunteers for their tireless efforts in bringing this project to fruition.
The event was witnessed by members of the University community, especially administrators and faculty members.
