The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Emmanuel Ohene Afoakwa, has underscored the vital role of staff well-being in achieving the University’s overarching goals, stating that “by prioritising Staff health and happiness, GCTU can foster a positive and productive work environment.”
He made this statement during the University’s maiden Annual Staff Games held on Wednesday, 30th April 2025, at the GCTU Sports Complex in Tesano. The event, themed “Empowering Workers, Building a Better Future”, was organised under the auspices of the Vice-Chancellor and brought together staff from various Directorates, Departments and Faculties to participate in a wide range of sporting activities.

Prof. Afoakwa stressed that a healthy and active workforce is essential to the University’s success. He added that “outputs and results can only be attained when Staff are in good physical and mental health.” He also emphasised unity, respect and collaboration as key pillars to building GCTU into the best ICT University in Ghana and West Africa.

The Registrar, Mr. Emmanuel Baidoo, echoed similar sentiments, highlighting the importance of work-life balance. Quoting the popular adage, “All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy,” he noted that the Staff Games offered an excellent opportunity for employees to relax, bond and showcase their talents. He expressed his appreciation to the Vice-Chancellor for the initiative and commended the organising committee for a successful event.

The Director of Sports, Mr. Emmanuel Asase, reiterated the need for regular physical activity and encouraged staff to make use of the sports complex facilities. He also raised concerns over the low turnout of male staff at the regular aerobics sessions and urged increased participation to promote better health.
The day’s events featured a variety of competitive and recreational games, including football, basketball, volleyball, table tennis, draughts and emerging sports such as Pickleball. The football matches saw Senior Staff clinch victory in the men’s division, defeating PUJUSA 4-1 in the preliminaries and TEWU 1-0 in the finals. In the women’s football match, Team A (a combined team of GAUA and Senior Staff) triumphed over Team B.
