Huawei Technologies donates Equipment to GCTU

On Thursday, 20th August, 2020, the University played host to the culmination of a groundbreaking project that was initiated between the Ghana Communication Technology University and Huawei Company Ltd. The initiative, which was originally started by the late Dr. Kweku Arthur, our former Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, saw the University receive a significant amount of brand new equipment, which will be used in our Telecom Engineering Lab.

Switches and routers and other Telecom Equipments

The equipment, which included a number of switches and routers were graciously donated by the Huawei Co. Ltd, and would be used to support our students in the practical application of some the theoretical concepts that they are introduced to in the classroom. Present at the event were a number of representatives from Huawei, including Mr. Kweku Essuman Quansah, the company’s Deputy Managing Director, and Mr. David Appiah, the Public Relations Manager.

Speaking to those gathered, Mr. Quansah gave a brief insight into the background and rationale for the project, highlighting Huawei’s excitement at collaborating with GCTU, particularly within the context of further academic and industry partnerships. Mr. Quansah alluded to the long-standing association between the two institutions, pointing out the fact that over the years, GCTU had provided Huawei with a significant number of its past and existing workforce. He spoke magnanimously about the quality of students that the University has trained and stated his hope that the institutions would continue to share mutual benefits long into the foreseeable future.

Vice-President of the University, Prof. Isaac Blankson

The Vice-President of the University, Prof. Isaac Blankson, was also present at the event, and paid tribute to the generosity, foresight and commitment that Huawei had shown in making sure this initiative came to fruition. Prof. Blankson, who himself played a major role in the facilitation of this partnership, also took the opportunity to acknowledge the massive role that the late Dr. Kweku Arthur played in the conception and realization of such an important contribution to the University as a whole.

Receiving the equipment on behalf of the University, the President, Prof. Emmanuel Ohene Afoakwa, thanked Huawei for their gracious donation, and assured them that the equipment would be put to profitable use. Prof. Afoakwa highlighted the fact the University was now officially a public institution and this project served to signal the beginning of greater things as we continued to cement our status as the nation’s premier technology and innovation based academic institution. He reiterated Mr. Quansah’s assertion that the partnership would continue to grow from strength to strength and would serve to improve the status of both institutions as well as the nation at large.

In a closing statement, Mr. Appiah, Huawei’s PR Manager, thanked all involved for their key contributions, and signaled Huawei’s intent to integrate the institution’s ICT training programmes into the University’s main academic curriculum.

We are indeed grateful to Huawei for such a generous and important contribution and we are confident that this partnership will go a long way towards the elevation of the University, particularly as we begin our journey as a fully-fledged public institution.
