
GCTU proudly celebrates its Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Emmanuel Ohene Afoakwa, who was honoured with the prestigious Laureate of Distinction in Natural Sciences at the 2025 Millennium Excellence Awards on Friday, May 9, 2025, at the Manhyia Palace in Kumasi, under the esteemed patronage of His Royal Majesty Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.
Prof. Afoakwa’s award citation highlighted his significant contributions to cocoa and chocolate research, food science and nutrition and innovative food processing techniques. His work has led to improved food security, economic development and capacity building, earning both local and international acclaim for its impact on agricultural value chains and sustainable development.

Beyond his academic achievements, Prof. Afoakwa serves as the Chief of Fiapre Traditional Area in the Bono Region, known by his stool name, Obrempong Professor Kyem-Amponsah II. His dual roles in academia and traditional leadership exemplify a commitment to national development and cultural heritage.
The 2025 Millennium Excellence Awards also recognised other distinguished academics, including Emeritus Professor Clifford Nii Boi Tagoe and Prof. Gordon A. Awandare, for their outstanding contributions to Mathematics and Science Excellence, and Biomedical Research, respectively.
