The Career Development Unit of the Office of the Dean of Student Affairs, GCTU, has held its annual Career Compass Seminar to introduce new students to career development opportunities and guide them in identifying professional paths related to their academic programmes.
The seminar, held on Wednesday, November 4, 2026, attracted hundreds of students to the Silicon Valley Auditorium, where they received valuable insights into career and professional opportunities related to their academic programmes.
Students from the University’s various faculties and schools attended presentations on career planning, professional development and the skills required to pursue opportunities in their chosen fields.
Under the theme, ‘Navigating Your Future Through Discovering Your Career Fit and Aligning Skills and Interests,’ the seminar formed part of the University’s efforts to help students identify career opportunities related to their academic programmes and make informed decisions about their professional futures.

In her opening remarks, the Dean of Student Affairs, Prof. Ruhiya Abubakar, described the seminar as an important platform for connecting students with industry professionals and exposing them to practical experiences that could guide their career development.
She urged students to identify their interests and strengths early in their academic journey, noting that self-awareness was essential to making informed career choices.

In a presentation, a Deputy Registrar of the Directorate of Research, Innovation and Consulting, Dr Kwame Owusu Afram, discussed the fundamental concepts and objectives of career development.
He explained the meaning of a career and outlined the skills students would need to identify and pursue opportunities in their chosen professions.
Dr Afram observed that some graduates struggle to apply the knowledge acquired during their studies because they lack adequate awareness of the career opportunities available to them.
He urged students to remain focused on their academic goals and take deliberate steps to develop the skills required for their future careers.
