The Ghana Communication Technology University (GCTU), through its Department of Computer Engineering, has secured a prestigious grant from the Google DeepMind AI Research Foundation to advance Artificial Intelligence (AI) education, research and capacity building within the University community.

The grant will support the training of AI Champions among faculty members, who will subsequently train Teaching Assistants (TAs) and students in emerging AI technologies and applications. The programme is designed to deepen participants’ understanding of the technologies underpinning advanced language models, including Google Gemini, while equipping them with the skills to build, train and fine-tune modern AI models from the ground up.

Targeted at university students and community learners with proficiency in Python and backgrounds in Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics and related technical disciplines, the programme will provide access to specialized training developed by Google DeepMind. Participants will gain valuable knowledge and practical skills that will enhance research, innovation and teaching in the rapidly evolving field of Artificial Intelligence.

Speaking on the achievement, the Head of the Department of Computer Engineering, Dr. Samuel Danso, described the grant as a significant milestone for both the Department and the University.

“This award reflects GCTU’s commitment to excellence in technology-driven education and research. It positions the University to play a leading role in developing AI expertise and fostering innovation within Ghana and beyond,” he said.

Dr. Danso noted that the initiative would strengthen the University’s capacity to deliver cutting-edge AI education while creating opportunities for faculty and students to engage in advanced research and knowledge sharing.

The project is expected to enhance students’ awareness of global developments in Artificial Intelligence and equip them with the digital, technical and analytical competencies required to thrive in today’s technology-driven economy. By providing hands-on exposure to modern AI tools and methodologies, the programme will help prepare graduates to meet the evolving demands of the industry.

The University community has welcomed the grant with enthusiasm, viewing it as another important step in GCTU’s mission to strengthen its reputation as a leading institution for ICT education, innovation and international research collaboration.

GCTU congratulates the Department of Computer Engineering and all stakeholders whose efforts contributed to securing this important grant opportunity.
