The Guidance and Counseling Unit under the Office of the Dean of Students Affairs has officially launched the maiden edition of the Mental Health Awareness Month on May 4, 2026, at the Main Reception, Tesano Campus.
Speaking at the launch, the Acting Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ebenezer Malcalm, described the occasion as a significant milestone in the University’s institutional calendar, stating that it draws attention to an essential aspect of human well-being.
He noted that mental health is not merely the absence of illness, but rather a fundamental pillar of human development and institutional progress. He emphasized the need for collective action to dismantle the stigma surrounding mental health by replacing silence with openness and fear with understanding.
“No member of our community should feel isolated or unsupported in times of need,” he stated, while reaffirming the University’s commitment to fostering a culture of care, empathy and shared responsibility.
He encouraged both students and staff to take advantage of the services provided by the University’s Counseling Unit throughout the awareness month and beyond.

In her opening address, the Dean of Students Affairs, Prof. Emelia Amoako Asiedu, emphasized the importance of mental health as a critical component of academic excellence and national development. She noted that mental well-being is essential for students to thrive academically, socially and emotionally and urged members of the University community to prioritize self-care and seek support whenever necessary.

The Mental Health Awareness Month initiative which inspires support for the mentally challenged is expected to feature a series of activities aimed at promoting mental health education, encouraging open conversations and strengthening support systems across the University community.
