A 50-member GCTU sports contingent has made a remarkable debut at the 28th Edition of the Ghana Universities Sports Association (GUSA) Games which began on January 3 and is scheduled to conclude with a closing ceremony on January 17, 2024.

The two-week competition hosted by the University of Cape Coast has seen GCTU’s athletes showcase incredible determination, skill and team spirit. GCTU was proudly represented by 43 athletes, 2 student leaders and 5 officials across seven disciplines: athletics, badminton, basketball, goalball, table tennis, tennis and football. As newcomers to the prestigious tournament, the GCTU contingent demonstrated grit and potential, solidifying their place in Ghana’s university sports arena.

KEY HIGHLIGHTS OF GCTU’S PERFORMANCE
Badminton and Goalball

The badminton team displayed immense promise, advancing to the next stage of the competition before bowing out in a close contest. Similarly, the goalball team embarked on a challenging journey, gaining invaluable experience in a sport that was a new venture for GCTU.

Tennis Success

A standout performance came from Abraham Sosu, a Level 300 Information Systems student who reached the quarterfinals of the tournament. Competing against some of the country’s top-ranked players, Abraham’s success underscores GCTU’s ability to compete at the highest level.

Basketball Achievements

The basketball team also made their presence felt, securing a well-deserved victory over the University of Environment Sustainable Development (UESD). While they faced defeats against KNUST, UG and UEW, their strong showing highlighted the growing potential of GCTU’s basketball programme.

Football Highlights

The GCTU football team delivered an admirable performance. Despite a dramatic loss in their opening match against a formidable UDS team, they bounced back with a convincing win over UniMAC. However, a contentious defeat to UESD in their final group match saw them narrowly miss out on the quarterfinals.

Javelin Bronze Medal

The highlight of GCTU’s campaign came in the athletics arena, where Joel Seynam, a Level 200 IT student, made history by winning a bronze medal in the javelin competition. Joel’s achievement marks the University’s first-ever podium finish at the GUSA Games and serves as a beacon of inspiration for GCTU’s rising sports talent.
