Fiximami Wins Big At Maiden Techbiz-GCTU Competition

Fiximami beat off competition from nine other teams

Fiximami, an innovative student tech team, has clinched the top prize at the inaugural TechBiz-GCTU Competition, held from November 21 – 22, 2024, at the Florence Onny Auditorium.

Emerging as champions, Fiximami outshone other contestants with their groundbreaking app, which seamlessly connects service providers like plumbers, masons, carpenters, and gardeners with people in need of their services, paving the way for transformative tech solutions. TrendsHub secured the First-Runner-up position while Ridewell came in as the Second-Runner-up, rounding off a fiercely competitive event.

The two-day competition, organized by the Directorate of University Relations in collaboration with the Office of the Dean of Student Affairs and the Student Representative Council (SRC), provided a platform for students, startups and entrepreneurs to showcase their innovative and entrepreneurial ideas. The event was not only a showcase of talent but also a celebration of the fusion between technology and business within the GCTU community.

In her keynote address, the Director of University Relations, Dr. Nusrat-Jahan Abubakar, highlighted the significance of the TechBiz-GCTU competition as a transformative initiative. “Today, we celebrate the creativity, innovation and determination of our students,” she stated. According to her, the competition is more than just an event – it’s a movement designed to empower students to develop tech-based solutions to real-world challenges, demonstrating their ability to think critically, innovate boldly and create meaningful societal impact.

Prof. Malcalm launched the competition on behalf of the VC

Speaking at the event, the Dean of SGSR, Prof. Ebenezer Malcalm, who launched the competition on behalf of the Vice-Chancellor and Pro Vice-Chancellor, echoed these sentiments. He described the competition as a stepping stone for students to transition from learners to global changemakers. Prof. Malcalm urged participants to draw inspiration from the humble beginnings of tech giants like Google and Facebook, emphasizing the importance of leveraging such platforms to unleash their creative potential.

The visionary behind the competition, Mr. Jerry Baada Mualen, a proud GCTU alumnus, shared the journey of bringing TechBiz-GCTU to life. He described it as a dream-turned-reality aimed at nurturing innovation and entrepreneurship within the University. He expressed gratitude to the team and leadership, particularly Dr. Abubakar and Mr. Francis Edjah, for their unwavering support in making the project a success.

In an exclusive interview, Kingsley Buaben, team leader of Fiximami and a level 400 Computer Science student, expressed immense gratitude to the University for fostering an environment that promotes innovation and entrepreneurship. He attributed the team’s success to hard work, perseverance and the opportunities provided by GCTU. “This milestone motivates us to tackle new challenges and push our vision forward,” he remarked.
