GAUA-GCTU Hosts Maiden Professional Week Celebration
The Ghana Association of University Administrators (GAUA) – GCTU Chapter, officially launched its maiden Professional Week Celebration on Monday, November 11, 2024, at the Florence Onny Auditorium, with the theme: “Good Corporate Governance for the Growth and Sustainability of the University: The Role of the Administrator.”
The event brought together university administrators, executives from sister institutions and distinguished guests, including the Vice Chancellor of GCTU, Professor Emmanuel Ohene Afoakwa, who chaired the event. The special guest of honour was the Registrar of the University of Ghana, Mrs. Emelia Agyei-Mensah, who delivered a keynote address.
Chairman’s Remarks
In his opening remarks, Prof. Afoakwa highlighted the critical role of administrators in the growth and development of universities. He emphasized the need for good corporate governance as the foundation for accountability, transparency and integrity, noting that administrators act as the bridge between policies and execution.
“Without sound governance, growth is unsustainable and the mission of the university is at risk,” Prof. Afoakwa stated. He encouraged administrators to uphold principles of accountability and ethics while fostering a culture of collaboration to drive the institution’s long-term sustainability.
National Representative’s Address
Representing the GAUA National President, Mr. Felix Adu-Poku lauded GCTU’s progress since joining the GAUA fraternity three years ago. He acknowledged the resilience of members in advocating for improved working conditions and reiterated the commitment to addressing key issues such as office infrastructure, allowances and placement disparities.
He also congratulated the GCTU chapter on organizing its maiden Professional Week, expressing optimism that the discussions and outcomes would positively impact the future of university administration in Ghana.
GAUA-GCTU President’s Welcome
The President of the GAUA-GCTU Chapter, Mr. Kwame Owusu Afram, warmly welcomed attendees and underscored the importance of university administrators in ensuring the smooth functioning and long-term growth of academic institutions.
“As stewards of our institutions, we shape the frameworks that allow universities to thrive,” he said. Mr. Afram commended the support of GCTU Management and the dedication of GAUA members, adding that the week would provide valuable insights into improving governance practices and fostering professional growth.
Special Guest of Honour
Mrs. Emelia Agyei-Mensah delivered a keynote address, drawing from her extensive experience as a university administrator. She underscored the importance of inclusivity, transparency and ethical practices in achieving sustainable growth. Mrs. Agyei-Mensah also shared practical strategies for implementing good governance in university settings, inspiring participants to prioritize excellence in their roles.

In his closing remarks, Professor Afoakwa praised the success of the launch and commended Mrs. Agyei-Mensah for her insightful presentation. He encouraged participants to apply the lessons learned throughout the week to enhance GCTU’s growth and sustainability.
The Professional Week Celebration featured a lineup of activities, including workshops, panel discussions and sporting activities aimed at fostering collaboration and professional development among members.
GAUA-GCTU’s maiden Professional Week Celebration not only celebrates the contributions of university administrators but also sets the stage for a renewed commitment to good governance and institutional excellence.
As part of the fun-fair that interspersed the GAUA Professional Week celebration were cooking and sporting competitions, as well as a music and dance session, organized for all the staff associations and the SRC on campus. Other connected activities included a health insurance presentation and a health screening session.
