What is the programme in MA in Education (Educational Leadership) about?

The MA in Education award is a two (2) year collaborative programme between GTUC and Staffordshire University in UK. It is designed to create a learner-centered experience for education professionals and practitioners (both public and private sector) who seek out high quality master level education. It develops intense passion for working in education whilst extending and enhancing student’s educational development.

The programme is designed to give individuals the flexibility to choose study modules based on their own professional roles and responsibilities in education. It is very interactive and draws on the experiences of participants, supported by current research and practice-informed teaching in relation to a range of education issues.

The programme is distinctive as it enables students reflect and develop new ideas to improve current education practices. It gives a critical examination of education practice, policy and research through a variety of specialist modules. Students are expected to critically appraise the current and new educational developments, as well as evaluate the policies and directives that may have sparked their emergence. This builds the skills of participants to develop their capacity to provide constructive and thoughtful input to bring about change within education organizations.

A critical approach to reflective education practice is an all important skill which students acquire on the programme.

What is the programme format?

On the certificate and Diploma stages, the main teaching and learning approaches are:
• Workshops and Seminars
• Face to face lectures at GTUC by “flying faculty” from Staffordshire
University
• Seminars and workshops
• Work-based tasks and self-assessments
• Independent study which may be via blended or distance approaches

Lectures are given via weekend and week block sessions to ensure that participants can attend classes in addition to working.

Learning Resources

Students are admitted as Staffordshire University Students and will have direct asses to the learning management system platforms (Blackboard) used by Staffordshire University..

What are the stages on the programme?

There are three main stages on the MA in education programme:

  • • Certificate
  • • Diploma and
  • • Masters

Flexibility is provided for students to choose 2 modules at the certificate stage, and 2 modules at the diploma stage. Modules on dissertation are mandatory requirement for the master’s degree.

What are the modules on the programme?

Students are expected to complete 6 modules; 4 taught modules and 2 dissertation modules.

  2. Educational Leadership and Management
  3. Mentoring and Coaching in Education Settings
  4. Collaborative Working in Education
  5. Dissertation Part 1
  6. Dissertation Part 2

Each module draws on concepts, theory and published research that will be relevant to the decisions which practitioners have to make. Students are expected to go through each stage of the programme before progressing to the Masters level. Certificates may be given after each stage.

Entry Requirement

A bachelor’s degree in Education with at least second class lower division. Applicants without the required specialist academic background must have a first degree and at least two years work experience in teaching or education management. International Students whose programmes were not taught in English are required to show proof of proficiency in the use of the English language.

To be eligible for the programme, applicants must employed in an educational role in an educational setting. This is essential as all modules require participants to evaluate and reflect upon their own current practices as an education professional in order to achieve the learning outcomes.
