On Saturday, 5th March, 2022, the University played host to its 28th Matriculation Ceremony. The event, which was held at the forecourt of the Main campus in Accra, served as an induction ceremony for the 1845 students who were admitted during the January 2022 intake.

In his traditional welcome address to the Matriculants, the Vice-Chancellor of the University, Prof. Emmanuel Afoakwa congratulated them and assured them that they had made the right decision in choosing GCTU.

He stressed the institution’s commitment to fulfilling its mandate by placing itself at the forefront of research and technology-oriented education in the country and the sub-region, specifically stating, “You are now a part of an institution that strives for excellence in all areas of research and teaching; an institution that has been at the forefront of ICT education since its establishment” The Vice-Chancellor also alluded to the power of education, particularly in its ability to inspire positive development for those who are fortunate enough to benefit from it.

He said, “Education is not just about the acquisition of knowledge but it engenders honesty, respect, equality and compassion. Knowledge therefore is awareness of knowing about the what, why, when, where and how of anything. It is power, both intellectually & physically.”

He concluded his message to the students by reiterating that they should view their education as an opportunity to “redefine their future”, while encouraging them to place maximum efforts in their academic pursuits.

Subsequent to the Vice-Chancellor’s address, the focus of the event shifted to the official confirmation of the Matriculants’ status as junior members of the University.

For this important part of the ceremony, the Interim Registrar of GCTU, Mr. Nii Adotei Abrahams, was called upon to administer the matriculation oath, before the Vice-Chancellor officially pronounced them as members of the University. On behalf of the Matriculating class of January 2022, Mr. Richard Abbey Junior, a B.Sc. Information Technology student, gave an address which detailed the expectations of the Matriculating class, and also took the opportunity to urge his colleagues to foster a spirit of belief in their ability to succeed and make the most of their time at GCTU.

The event, which was streamed live on various social media platforms, was also attended virtually by the new students from each of the University’s satellite campuses. Overall, it proved to be largely successful and bore testament to the enthusiasm and excitement of our new students as they embark on what promises to be a fulfilling and rewarding journey.
