“You need to be able to assess your unique selling advantage, what makes your college different”, he said adding that they should be able to empower the teacher trainees who would in turn create empowered children to help change the fortunes of the nation positively. He advocated the use of fair disciplinary measures to correct the behaviour of students as opposed to those that create resentment and recalcitrance among them. This he said could translate into high-handedness when they eventually become teachers.

“We cannot create a critical-thinking workforce in this country when we try to tame children. Children must respect and they will respect but it does not mean they should be coerced by the cane to do so.

“These are not the sort of teachers you want to create in your college – those that believe children must be whipped into submission. Our children should be counselled and guided and they will do the right thing.

“I believe that the same way you counsel your children at home and don’t cane them every day, you should create a teacher training environment where teachers enter the classroom and they can take charge and get the children to fall in line without using fear”, the Minister added.

He further charged them to complement Government’s effort to place more emphasis on Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics education which he said is critical to our survival as a nation in the 21st century. He alluded to the rapid changes in the world today saying that we must keep pace with the rest of the world.

The Chairman of the Council, Maulvi Mohammed Bin Salih who is the Head of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Mission in Ghana, thanked the Minister and the President of the Republic for reposing confidence in them and pledging their total commitment to working to achieve great results for the College in particular and the country at large.
