The Acting Vice-Chancellor of GCTU, Prof. Ebenezer Malcalm, has cautioned students against the unethical use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in academic work, stressing that they should uphold academic integrity and ensure that their assignments reflect their own intellectual contributions.
Prof. Malcalm made the remarks when he addressed newly enrolled students at the orientation programme for the School of Graduate Studies and Research (SGSR) on Friday, September 25, 2026, at the University’s main campus in Tesano, Accra.
He said that while AI could be a useful tool for research and learning, but students must not rely on it to produce academic work without applying their own understanding and appropriately acknowledging sources.
Prof. Malcalm said GCTU has the technological capacity to detect academic work generated through AI and would not tolerate plagiarism or other forms of academic misconduct.
He urged the students to uphold the highest standards of academic integrity, originality, honesty and ethical conduct, which he described as fundamental principles of scholars.
The Vice Dean of SGSR, Dr Afia Nyarko Boakye, urged the newly enrolled students to make good use of the resources and support services available to them, engage positively with lecturers and colleagues and take their research and academic responsibilities seriously.
She reminded the students that postgraduate education requires independent thinking, critical inquiry, collaboration and a willingness to learn continuously.
The Head of Administration of SGSR, Dr Mark Ofori Nketia, assured the students that the administration remained open and committed to addressing their concerns, particularly those relating to their academic programmes.
A Senior Lecturer at the GCTU Business School, Dr Ethel Tenkorang, said the Business School programmes blend theory with practical learning, equipping students with the knowledge, skills and confidence to thrive in today’s dynamic business environment, adding that the School had put the necessary arrangements in place to welcome and support the newly enrolled students.
A Senior Lecturer and Head of the Information Systems Department, Dr Fred Amankwah-Sarfo, also urged the students to take advantage of the opportunities available to them at the University.
He expressed the University’s excitement about welcoming the new students and encouraged them to work hard towards becoming responsible graduates and proud alumni of GCTU.
